Athletics Mercado Garcia

14U Carvalho | Class of 2031 | Pitcher / Outfield
For Gwen Anderson, softball has always been about more than what happens between the lines. After eight years in the game, some of the things she values most are the memories she has made, the people she has met, and the simple joy of playing the sport she loves.
A pitcher who also plays both corner outfield positions, Gwen brings a steady mentality to the field. She considers one of her greatest strengths to be her ability to control her emotions and not let mistakes or difficult moments get her down.
That mindset has been especially important this year. After undergoing elbow surgery in June, Gwen has been working hard to rebuild her arm strength and get back to where she wants to be.
Her goals haven't changed.
This season, Gwen has set her sights on adding a new weapon in the circle: learning to throw a rise ball. Looking further ahead, she hopes softball will eventually give her the opportunity to attend a great college and continue playing the game at the next level.
A Memory She'll Never Forget
One of Gwen's favorite softball memories came during 12U All-Stars. Her team found itself in an extremely close tournament game, battled all the way through, and came away with the win.
It's a memory that represents much of what Gwen loves about softball—the competition, her teammates, and experiencing those big moments together.
Her Biggest Influence
When Gwen thinks about the person who has influenced her most as an athlete, she doesn't have to look far.
Her dad.
He has worked with Gwen on softball since she first started playing, and she credits him as an important part of her journey.
"He has worked with me on softball since I started, and I'm very grateful for that."
Beyond the Softball Field
Softball isn't the only sport Gwen has competed in. She previously played club volleyball as both a libero and outside hitter.
When winter arrives, there's another activity she looks forward to: skiing. Gwen gets the opportunity to ski almost every year and says it's something she loves doing.
There's also a special connection that has followed her through much of her softball journey. Gwen played alongside her best friend beginning in 8U recreational softball, and the two remained teammates all the way until Gwen joined Athletics Mercado.
Eight years into her softball journey, Gwen is now writing the next chapter—working her way back, developing her game, and pursuing the opportunity to someday play college softball.
Keep working, Gwen. The journey is just getting started.
